Practical Theology
I grew up in Cairo in a pastor’s home. Since my teen years, I’ve been involved in various teaching and leading ministries. At age 16 I was selected by the Egyptian government to represent Egypt at Pearson College, an international school in Canada dedicated to peace and international understanding worldwide. Two years later I went to Calvin University seeking a liberal arts Christian education to help me integrate my faith and my social justice convictions.
Following my graduation, I moved back to Cairo, where I earned a Master’s degree in social psychology from the American University in Cairo under the supervision of human rights activist, Dr. Saad Eddin Ibrahim. During those years, I married Rev. Naji Umran (a Canadian from Syrian origins), and together we served at Heliopolis Community Church for 3 years. Then we moved to North American in 2002, where we each earned a Master’s of Divinity at Calvin Theological Seminary, and together served churches in Michigan and British Columbia. Then God called my husband, myself, and our four sons, Jonathan, Sebastian, Emmanuel and Alexander, to return to Egypt in September 2011.
I worked at Calvin University for 13 years as the Resource Development Specialist for Global and Multi-cultural worship, where I coordinated international worship conference in 15 countries. I’ve been working as a psychologist and counselor since 2000. Since 2013, I have been teaching courses on Preaching, Communication, Psychology, Theology and Practices of Worship, and Spiritual Formation at the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Cairo. In 2022, I earned a PhD in theology with a concentration on Preaching at Fuller Theological Seminary in Southern California, USA.
My areas of interest include travel and learning about the cultural influences on the church worldwide, creating new ministries, mentoring youth, administration, poetry and music.

Joseph Louis
Practical Theology
My name is Joseph Louis. I grew up in upper Egypt in a faithful Christian family that taught me faith since my childhood. I was blessed with amazing parents who reflected God’s love and His true image. My local Church, the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Ayoub, had a significant role in shaping my faith, knowing God, encouraging me, and discovering God’s call to my life. Early on during my university study, I realized God’s voice in my life to be a pastor.
God confirmed his call to pastoral ministry when I was accepted into the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Cairo (ETSC) to study the M.Div. program in 2012. For me, ETSC is one of the most important stations in my life. It helped me think critically about the ideas and concepts about God and Christian life, in general, to strengthen my faith and confirm God’s call. One of the great principles I learned from ETSC is that learning and spiritual formation are lifetime journeys. I need to be humble before the grace of God and always acknowledge my limits and the need to deepen my relationship with God and myself.
On August 1, 2021. ETSC invited me to join the seminary faculty as a full-time teaching assistant in pastoral care and counseling. It was a massive shift for me to move from pastoral ministry to the academic field. It has been a big responsibility to be in one of the Middle East’s ancient theological institutions since 1863, with more than 500 hundred students currently studying in different programs. It’s a great honor to play a role in preparing the future leaders of the Church.

Samuel Rozfy
President, Practical Theology
Samuel Rozfy
President, Practical Theology
Biography
Dr. Rev. Samuel was born in Suhag, in Southern Egypt in 1963. He grew up attending a village church several times a week. At the age of 15, he moved from the rural village to the urban area of Port Said next to the Suez Canal, where he became more actively involved in ministry, and where a small group of peers affirmed his gifts and encouraged him to consider a future full-time ministry. But it was not until he was 18 years-old when he first sensed God’s call to this service.
Upon completion of his secondary education, Samuel enrolled in the four-year Bachelor of Theology program at the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Cairo (ETSC) 1981-1985. There he learned many skills through his studies, but it was the lives and ministry of some of his teachers that shaped him even more. Following seminary, Samuel entered the pastorate in 1986 in the First Presbyterian Church in Al-Tayeeba, a village in Upper Egypt, where he was ordained as a pastor in 1987, and ministered until he joined ETSC as an instructor in 1992.
While pastoring in Al-Tayeeba he trained the youth from which six are now ordained as pastors and another six are elders. The church established an NGO to develop the village through a preschool and medical clinics. This also raised the awareness towards child and health care in the village.
God blessed his ministry in Al-Tayeeba Church with tremendous growth very quickly as he trained church leaders, and he gained significant practical experience. Samuel’s time as a pastor greatly informed his teaching of courses on pastoral care and counseling at the seminary. He also offered numerous counseling sessions to seminary students and sometimes to their wives as well. He is credited with founding the Relationships and Training Department at ETSC. He served as The Dean for Relationships and Training from 2010–2020. He was head of the Practical Theology Department from 2008 through 2018.He has also been a member of the Academic Committee. In July 2023 Samuel assumed the presidency of ETSC.
He married Amgaad Samuel in 1990, and has a son Rofy, who was born in 1991, and a daughter, Lora who was born in 1997.
Samuel is a member of the following association:
Synod of the Nile
